by Mohd Asrul on June 30, 2010

In this tutorial you will learn how to make a flipping page effect using photoshop. You can usually see this flipping book page effect in Flash eMagazine. But we won’t be making the Flash version. This tutorial will only show you on how to get the feel and look of the flipping page effect by only using Photoshop. This project is very simple and easy to follow, you can finish it under 20 minutes.

Step 1

Create a new document by going to File> New
Put this settings:-

Width 930
Height 636
Resolution 300

And Hit OK

Step 2

Import 3 pages of pictures. Any pictures you want to. If you do not have any, you can use the attached pictures in the project files.  Sort and name the layers as shown in Picture 2a.

Then, resize it like 75% smaller like Picture 2b.

Step 3

Select layer Flipped_page

Use Polygonal Lasso tool and make a shape like in Picture 3a

After you have made the selection, go to Select > Inverse to make an inverse selection.

Cool Tips!
Press CTRL and SHIFT and I simultaneously to make an inverse selection!

Then, hit delete key. This will clear the unwanted portion. Press CTRL and D to deselect. The result will be same as Picture 3b.

Step 4

Next, what you need to do is move the flipped_page layer like in Picture 4. Use the move tool to do this. You may have to resize it a bit to get the border properly alligned.

Step 5

Create a new layer above flipped_page layer. Next, click the Gradient Tool and make the gradient settings like Picture 5a.

The left most color stop is grey, the center is black and the right most is white.

Before we make the gradient, we need to select the area for the gradient to be covered. Select flipped_page layer, choose Magic Wand Tool and click the white background. Then, press CTRL and SHIFT and I to inverse the selection. You will get results like in Picture 5b.

Step 6

Select the layer above flipped_page which is Layer 1. This time, use the gradient tool and make a gradient diagonally upwards from left to right. Refer to the red arrow in Picture 6a for guidance. Then deselect by pressing CTRL and D

Still on Layer 1, on layer blending, choose Hard Light as in Picture 6b. Then, turn down its opacity level to 33%. Right click on layer 1 and duplicate it.

Step 7

Double click on Flipped_page layer to bring out Layer Style. Turn on Drop Shadow and put the settings as in Picture 7.

Step 8

Select opened_page layer. Use Polygonal Lasso tool to select as in Picture 8a and cut out the area by hitting delete as in Picture 8b to expose the layer underneath.

Thats it! Give a pat on yourself.

Conclusion

There are many ways for achieving a flipping book page effect in photoshop. One of them is what you have learn just now. My version is pretty straight forward. Using my photoshop technique, you can make the flipping bigger or even smaller like many Web 2.0 style. I hope you have learn something valuable from me. If there are request for me to make another photoshop tutorial version of flipping page which is curling page, I’m happy to make one. Good luck.
