Photoshop Tutorial :How to Remove Person From Background Tutorial

Adobe Photoshop CS5 just launched recently. It has many cool new features. But it has one unique feature that will save up your time in photo manipulation which is Content Aware. This tutorial will be focusing on how to use Content Aware Fill to retouch a stock picture. For you to follow this tutorial, I have included the files in project files which you can download at the link below.

Step 1

Open your Photoshop CS5 and load photo_1946_20060914 in the folder you just downloaded. This photo has a beautiful scenery but the two ladies were blocking its glory. We will attempt to remove them and repair minor blotches using content aware.

Step 2

Using the Polygonal Lasso tool, carefully select the shape of the ladies. Follow as close as I did in the picture below.

Cool tips!

Zoom in to get an accurate view while making selection by pressing CTRL and +. Press CTRL and - to zoom out. Use SPACEBAR to move the canvas while making selection.

Step 3

Press SHIFT and F5 key to pop out the fill box. Under Contents, use Content-Aware and leave other settings. Hit OK. Wait for a while for Photoshop to process the selected area.

Step 4

Though you see the replacement is not perfect especially the area near the lake. We will try to fix it by giving the lake the same amount of blur. Press CTRL and D to deselect.

Using the Polygonal Lasso, carefully make a selection around the lake area as the picture below.

Step 5

With the lake selected, go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. In the radius box, type 1.3 and click OK

Step 6

Zoom in at the area the lake edges. Use Blur Tool with 50% strength and blur the area where the ladies previously were standing.

Step 7

We will clean up the blue blotches on the lake. Use lasso tool to select the blotches. After that, press Shift and F5 to pop out the Fill box again. Select Content Aware and click OK. Wait for Photoshop to process and press CTRL and D to unselect.

Cool Tips!

If you want to add more selection, press Shift while making a new selection.

Step 8

You will notice there is some scribble on the clouds. Remove it by repeating Step 7

Step 9

Almost finish. For final touch we will boost up the color a bit.

Go to Image > Selection > Curves. For the setting, follow the picture below.

Then, go to Image > Adjustment > Vibrance and follow the settings below.

This is a simple introduction to Photoshop CS5 Content aware fill. With this new feature you can get the tedious work that will take hours to be finish into just a few minutes. Content Aware is the best tool Adobe has ever made for its Photoshop series. I hope with this tutorial you will be able to put more time in creating and less time in manipulating photos!
